5 Alternative Fitness Boosting Sports to Try

November 19, 2014 by admin

Football, rugby and tennis are all fun, healthy activities but for some people who have grown up playing them and other common sports so often, they can lose their spark. If you’re looking for a new, exciting sport to try that still provides plenty of physical exertion there are various options out there.

Zorbing

Gaining in popularity with stag parties, zorbing can also be a worthwhile and fun sport. The zorb is a transparent plastic orb you climb inside. There are a few different varieties, from the regular rolling down a slope version to crashing into other participants ala the dodgems or playing 5-a-side while in a zorb. It tests your balance and flexibility, while zorb football requires more endurance and strength.

Mini BMX

Cycling is another sport good for endurance, but for a real rush BMXing is king. If that’s not enough then give mini-BMXing a whirl. A relatively new innovation this involves all the traits of regular BMXing but on a smaller bike, giving it more of an edge. Skate Hut have the latest range of mini BMX bikes that are sturdy and suitable for anyone aged 4 and above.

Roller Derby

To spice up roller skate marathons roller derby was invented. Two teams of five race around a track scoring points by the designated scorer lapping the other team as participants block each other off. It’s a physical contact sport involving strength, balance and endurance. Just as popular with women as men, there are new teams popping up in most major cities.

Sepak Takraw

Developed in South East Asia, Sepak Takraw is a lot like volleyball but with no use of the hands. Instead feet, knees, head and chest are used to keep the smaller ball in the air and get it over the net onto your opponent’s side. This results in more interesting movements and involves great flexibility and focus to stay on top.

SlamBall

Essentially basketball but with four trampolines in front of the basket, SlamBall has been growing in stature the past decade with matches appearing on TV in America, Australia, Spain and beyond. It’s a physical game with American football style blocking allowed and flexibility is important for performing acrobatic slam dunks from the trampolines.

Due to needing a court with eight trampolines laid down it’s not so easy to find a local game, so why not start your own?
