A number of Ireland’s leading sports stars including World champion rower Mark O’Donovan and Ireland’s Basketball Ladies captain, Gráinne Dwyer, will be sharing their insights on the impact of nutrition on sport at a unique public event at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Monday 13th November at 7pm as part of Cork Science Festival.
The event, “Sporting a Better Diet” will discuss how nutrition directly impacts on athletic performance, whether professional sportsperson or novice. Organised by APC Microbiome Institute in partnership with Cork Science Festival, the panel also includes All Ireland medal winner and Cork Ladies GAA player Eimear Scally, All-Ireland Waterford Hurler Tom Devine, whose family also won ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family in 2015 and Shane O’Donnell, Hurler with Clare’s senior team.
“There are many myths surrounding nutrition and sports nutrition, and whether you are a weekend warrior, training for team sports or working out yourself a few days a week, it is vital to fuel your body adequately. My focus for this event will be on an individual approach to dealing with exercise nutrition requirements”, said Dr. Sharon Madigan, Head of Performance Nutrition at Sport Ireland who will be speaking at the event.

Dr. Paul Cotter of APC Microbiome Institute and Teagasc will be sharing how athlete’s microbiome is primed for tissue repair and to harness energy from diet, reflecting high cell turnover and significant energy needs of elite sportspeople. Dr. Cotter will discuss how these research findings provide evidence supporting the link between exercise and metabolic health and how they provide a platform for rational design of diets for those engaged in vigorous exercise.
Retired histopathologist Dr. Garry Lee will discuss his own story, his life-long battle with his waistiline, a family history of insulin resistance and his unique take on perceived wisdom of weight control and what’s wrong with the industry and the overwhelming importance of habit rather than willpower.
