People thinking of partaking in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon, taking place on Sunday 30th October, are advised to enter promptly with entries likely to close in the next few days due to the race capacity being reached.
Just less than two months out from the published entry deadline of 1st October, entries have already exceeded 2015’s record number of 15,600 and will close once the capacity of 17,500 deemed necessary for health and safety is reached.
Race organisers have been delighted by the level of interest in this year’s SSE AirtircityMarathon attributing some of the increase in entries to the hosting of the race for the first time on a Sunday, as opposed to the traditional October Monday bank holiday, designed to facilitate increased international participation. Organisers are now looking to increase capacity for the 2017 Marathon.
Race director, Jim Aughney commented on the uncharted enthusiasm for the event this year;
“It’s great to see so much interest this year. It shows how important running and staying fit has become in Ireland, as well as, how popular Ireland is as a travel destination for the international participants. We would love if we could cheer more runners across the line, but unfortunately we need to prioritise the health and safety of those involved. We have already started looking into ways we can increase capacity for next year, and hope any of those who miss it this year, will keep training and take part next year.”
