This summer, leading Reformer Pilates guru Eva Berg of The Secret Pilates Studio is offering up her top tips to help tone up and get in shape while having fun doing it. Pilates is now more popular than ever across Ireland, currently ranked as the number one preferred sporting activity alongside yoga among women. Pilates works well for all kinds of fitness levels while also exercising both mind and body.
Eva shares her expert advice to help be confident about your summer body and shares the secret to toning that tummy.
- Hit the Gym first thing
Eva recommends that doing a high intensity workout when you wake up is one of the best ways to maximise your workout and burn calories. Not only is the workout complete for the day, it also activates the metabolism straight away as you have fasted for the entire night. Throughout the day, the body will continue to burn more calories faster as opposed to doing an evening workout.
- The Two Month Trick
It’s important to give yourself plenty of time to form an effective exercise routine and ultimately to get in shape. Eva advises to ideally allow up to 8 weeks before you set off to get the best results. At The Secret, Eva recommends combining cardio and strengthening routines for ultimate results. Her key Pilates exercises that are essential in toning are; The Bicycle Crunch, The Plank and The Side Bend. The Plank is one of the most effective exercises to activate your core and can easily be done every day at home.
- Eat Natural
Eva suggests eating all natural foods if you are looking to slim down and to cut out artificial foods, sugar and salt. When focusing on toning and trimming the waist, she recommends the following:
- Green tea – loaded with antioxidants that boost the metabolism
- Organic raw apple cider vinegar – Regulates blood sugar, controls cravings and aids digestion
- Asparagus – filled with soluble and insoluble fibre, leaving you feeling full for longer
- Grapefruit – curbs cravings and is a fantastic low-calorie substitution
- Apples – filled with fibre and leaves you feeling full
- Up the intake
Eva recommends those who are training should have from three to six small meals each day. Frequent meals, as long as they’re healthy, keep the metabolism humming, staves off hunger, and controls blood sugar. Ultimately, it results in eating less and cuts out the cravings. Each meal should comprise of protein, vegetables and healthy fats. Good fats are essential in the diet, try incorporating avocado and nuts into more meals, as well as cooking protein in coconut oil.
- Chill the H2O
Drinking water is one of the best ways to combat the bloat and trim your tum. Eva recommends drinking an average of 2 litres of chilled water each day every day. Chilled water increases the amount of calories you burn, especially after an intensive workout. It also helps to fight cravings and flush toxins out of the system.
