Today marks 100 days to go until runners will line up for the 2016 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon. In the lead up, this Sunday 24th July, nearly 4,000 runners, joggers, and walkers will take part in the second event of the SSE Airtricity Race Series, the Fingal 10K in Swords.
The 10 kilometre route builds on last month’s Irish Runner 5 Mile in the Phoenix Park, gradually increasing the runners’ race distance as they prepare for the October 26.2 mile challenge.
The course is designed to cater for all abilities, from those beginning their first marathon journey to the seasoned elite. Rio bound, Mick Clohisey will be among the field, looking to tap into his marathon training on this longer distance to go one better from his second place finish in last month’s Irish Runner 5 mile to outpace middle distance runners, John Coghlan and David Flynn. On the women’s side, Dublin’s Catherina McKiernan will look to challenge her silver medal from last month’s SSE Airtricty series’ race to secure top position on the podium over, Belfast’s Cathy McCourt, the 2015 World Masters Championships 5K Bronze medallist.
Commenting on this year’s Fingal 10K, Jim Aughney, race director for the SSEAirtricity Dublin Marathon said “With anticipation building towards the SSE AirtricityDublin Marathon, we are excited to play a part in the runners’ journey to the 26.2 milestone. The Fingal 10K is a fun, relaxed atmosphere that allows participants to get accustomed to the racing atmosphere and inspire them to keep pushing for the big one in October.”
Race organisers are reminding entrants that there will be road closures in place from early morning, so runners are advised to allow plenty of time. The race will start on the Fingal Main Street at 10am sharp. Parking will be available at the Pavilions Car Park in Swords (first 2 hours free). A bike park will also be provided close to the race start.
The next opportunity to take part in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Race Series will be the SSE Airtricity Frank Duffy 10 Mile which take place in the Phoenix Park on Saturday 20th August. Entry for registration closes 5th August, 2016.
