Europa Donna Ireland, the patient advocacy group working for better breast cancer services nationwide, invites friends and family across Ireland to get active in their community for Breast Health Day, October 15th, 2015.
Held every year, Breast Health Day aims to disseminate information concerning breast health and raise awareness of prevention and early detection of breast cancer among women and girls. This year’s theme is ‘Make Good Choices for Your Breast Health Every Day’. In line with this year’s theme, Europa Donna Ireland invites you to gather with friends and family in your locality and organise an event that gets you and your community active. Any form of physical activity qualifies, be it walking, running, dancing, cycling or hula-hooping! There is no event too big or small.
A growing body of evidence shows the link between healthy lifestyle choices and a lower risk of developing breast cancer. According to these studies, excess body weight and physical inactivity deserve special attention, since they account for 25-33 percent of all breast cancer cases. As a result, being active, eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding weight gain are three simple but crucial lifestyle choices that can positively impact the future of a woman’s breast health.
Speaking today, Dympna Watson, Chairperson, Europa Donna Ireland, said “The purpose of this year’s Breast Health Day campaign is to remind women that engaging in physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and eating a healthy diet can help protect their breast health. Organising a local event that gets the community active is a great way to highlight the importance of physical exercise in regards to breast health, while also being a fun and social outing for family and friends. We’re encouraging people in communities across the country to get together and get moving this Breast Health Day.”
You can spread the word about your community’s event via Facebook and Twitter. Creating a Facebook event page is particularly effective. To do so, create an event page containing all the relevant details of your community’s event. You should then share the page and invite your friends to join the event and also share the page. This is a great way of promoting the event and making your nearest and dearest aware of Breast Health Day 2015. Also, please post photos of your event on all social media platforms -Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – and tag Europa Donna Ireland, so the efforts made by communities across Ireland can be seen by one and all!
No fundraising is involved in organising a Breast Health Day event. It is an awareness-raising day for which Europa Donna Ireland will supply posters and leaflets. Please join the 2015 Breast Health Day campaign and make good choices for your future breast health every day. A small change in lifestyle today can make a difference in your breast health tomorrow.
