December 20, 2017 by admin

  • Climb the world’s highest mountain to Everest Base Camp
  • Trek the Via Francigena to the Vatican City in Rome

  • Embark on a Biblical journey into the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

Multiple Sclerosis Ireland is encouraging people to sign up for a 2018 MS trek and raise funds for vital services for those living with MS. MS Ireland has been organising treks around the world since 1989. The 2018 treks include climbing the world’s highest mountain to Everest Base Camp, trekking the Via Francigena to St Peter’s Square in Rome and making the Biblical journey into the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The treks are suitable for all levels of fitness providing a great opportunity to take part in active trips as an individual or group. Please visit www.ms-society.ie to get involved.

Funds raised will help provide one-to-one and family support including newly diagnosed sessions, physiotherapy and symptom management programmes through ten Regional Offices across the country, operate the MS Information Line and deliver specialised services in the MS Care Centre, Ireland’s only respite and therapy centre for people with MS.

Everest Base Camp

MS Ireland is proposing that new years’ challenges take new heights this coming Spring in trekking on the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, from April 11th to April 28th. Mount Everest sits at a staggering height of 8,848m above sea level to Everest Base Camp sitting proudly at 5,364m. The twelve day itinerary is designed to allow the trekkers to acclimatise to the altitude making the trip more enjoyable with breath-taking scenery. Located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, the route will take trekkers through Sherpa villages, bazaars and Buddhist monasteries.

Via Francigena

Active travel lovers are urged to follow in the footsteps of St Francis from June 2nd to June 10th 2018 in support of services for people with MS. Trekkers will walk part of the ancient pilgrim route from Assisi, the town most associated with St Francis to Rome the Eternal City.

The Via Francigena was the medieval pilgrimage route that historically connected Canterbury to Rome and passes primarily through France. The trip will include treks through historic towns and hamlets, the beautiful countryside and ancient villages, past lakes and vineyards, up hills with Cyprus groves arriving in Piazza San Pietro within the walls of the Vatican for the perfect end to the trek.

Jordan

Next October 13th to 20th, trekkers for MS will embark on an exciting Biblical journey into the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a land of unexpected beauty.

From the magical hidden city of Petra where the Queen of Sheba once showered her gifts on King Solomon, to Wadi Rum where Lawrence of Arabia spent time during the Arab Revolt. From the Dead Sea to Crusader Castles dotted throughout the countryside, this adventurous trek will encompass all of these highlights and more.

Lorraine Rooney, trek leader with MS Ireland speaks about her experiences, “The MS Ireland Treks are suitable for everyone through varying levels of fitness. It is very fulfilling to experience your own personal journey, walking along some of the most magical routes in the world while making new lifelong friends, as well as supporting such an important cause and raising vitally needed funds.”
