From the shallow pools of her home in Hollywood, Northern Ireland to deep sea diving around the globe, water baby Melanie Nocher has always lead a subaquatic life but in December 2012 she sent ripples through the sporting world when she came up for air and announced her retirement from competitive swimming at the tender age of 24. Now with the news announced in an official ERSI report that swimming is the most popular sporting activity in Ireland, especially amongst women, Melanie Nocher is sharing her highs and lows, top tips for avid female Irish swimmers and telling us all about her favourite beauty tool – MICRO Pedi!
Following a meteoric rise to success in competitive swimming and then some devastating lows which forced her to bow out of international games, Melanie Nocher is now jumping feet first into the next phase of her career and dipping her toes in new water, teaching babies, from as young as 3 months old, how to swim.
“From 12 to 24 I didn’t really have a life, swimming was engrained in my daily routine, it was like eating breakfast for me. After I retired the question became ‘what can I do that I’m good at and can help other people too?’ I’ve always loved kids so working with them and developing little Melanie Nochers is great!”
Melanie admits that spending another 4 years of her life training for the next Olympics wasn’t an option because she wants to make the most of her young life and would love to start a family sooner rather than later. Speaking about her beauty regime, the self-confessed ‘girly girl’ says:
“When you are a swimmer you have to look after your legs and feet really well. Constantly shaving your legs can lead to ingrown hairs so you have to exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate, even the boys! And obviously as a swimmer your feet take a lot of abuse, especially from swimming in chlorine water as this dries out your skin. My top tips are to always dry in between your toes to prevent athlete’s foot and also to regularly remove dry skin and callouses. MICRO Pedi is fantastic for this as it takes the chore out of the job for you, buffs away dry skin, it’s really quick and easy to use and I can take it in the bag with me whenever I’m on the move!”
Melanie’s professional swimming career may have ended but she insists that water will always be a part of her life and will have some impact on her career choices moving forward. No doubt wherever her career may take her, this is not the last we’ll see of Melanie Nocher!
