The 39th Maamturks Challenge will take place on the 12th April 2014, organised by the NUI Galway Mountaineering Club.
The challenge covers 24.3 kilometers over tough, mountainous terrain. The total ascent over the course of the walk is 2336 meters. The Challenge will begin between Maam and Maam Cross and finish in Leenane, Co Galway.
Check-in for the Walk will be open from 5am-7am or until the walk participant’s limit of 200 is reached. Checkpoints along the route and walkers or participants will be required to check in at all of these and have their Walk Cards punched.
The cut-off points and times will be at Loch Mhám Ochóige and the Col of Despondency and these will be implemented at 2pm and 5pm respectively. Unfortunately walkers that fail to make these cut-offs points and times will be requested to make their way to the nearest designated exit point.
In the interest of walker’s safety, we require all hillwalking to be properly equipped for a tough day’s walking or hiking with waterproof jacket/pants, strong boots, sufficient food/drink for the day and warm clothing,. All walkers, irrespective of whether they are a part of a walking group are required to be proficient in navigation in whitewash and have their own map(s), compass and/or GPS. The cost of registration is €25 and the closing date for entry is March 31st 2104.
