Our skin and hair needs extra care and attention during the summer. Both can burn and dry out during long summer days. However a few simple tips from industry insiders can not only heal the damage but can prevent it happening in the first place.
Summer Blotchy Skin –
Your skin is so blotchy from the heat and it looks and feels red hot. For an instant solution -take an evening primrose oil capsule, puncture it, and smooth the contents on clean, flushed skin at night. It’s high in the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid, which restores the moisture barrier and reduces the redness in a few hours. To cover blotches or large areas of redness, try mineral makeup. The minerals help calm skin but still cover redness, because the pigment is concentrated.
A Sunburned Nose –
The nose is the first hit when we get a sunburned face. It’s also one of the most common areas for nonmelanoma skin cancers. Be vigilant about protecting the face – wear a wide brimmed hat and apply SPF sunscreen. Be careful even after applying sunscreen, the skin there tends to be oilier than the rest of the face, so sunscreen breaks down faster. So frequently reapply a sunscreen – try St Tropez SPF 50 for face €20.34. It protects the skin while providing some colour so we are not washed out looking.
Sunburned –
It shouldn’t happen but if you forget to apply sunscreen, try to remedy the situation. Take two ibuprofen to dull the pain and reduce swelling. Have a cool shower, gently pat skin dry, and then place bags of frozen peas over the burned areas. Dab on a natural aloe Vera cooling and moisturising gel like Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera after Sun Gel €11.74. Aloe soothes the skin and helps with inflammation, too
Peeling Skin –
You got burned so the dead cells will peel away making your skin look damaged and unattractive. Allow scaly skin to shed naturally, and focus on keeping the area well hydrated by slathering on a rich, natural moisturizer rich such as Sanctuary Spa Essentials Crème Soufflé. It will replenish the moisture you’re losing from the upper layers of skin that are peeling off.
Dry, Brittle Hair
While we love the sun and the sea – our hair doesn’t. The combination of salt and chlorine is usually behind straw like hair. To camouflage the damage or prevent it happening in the first place, apply a leave in conditioner and apply liberally onto wet hair. It will penetrate the hair and strengthen it from the inside. Yes to Carrots do a good leave in conditioner €8.99. Cover with a damp towel and let it sit for as long as you can in the sunshine.
Enjoy the sun but stay looking good too.
