A recent specialist survey found that 45% of 16-24 year olds say they suffer from neck pain, which is a 28% increase from last year. This increase is mostly attributed to tablet and mobile phone usage; with technology becoming a daily accessory it’s becoming more urgent to address these issues.
Joanna Cowry-Lorry (BSc, Neuroscience, MChiro, CCEP, LC) London’s leading chiropractor from The London Wellness Centre shares her top tips on preventing neck pain which can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.
-
Try not to stay in one position for more than 2 hours. If you are sitting at your desk all day take a walk to the water fountain, the bathroom or up the stairs.
-
Make sure your mouse hand can move freely above your desk. If your arm does not move such that all the muscles are engaged at various points, your muscles may lock.
-
Roll your shoulders forward and backwards every hour. This ensures that your muscles go through the entire range of motion, stretching and ensuring proper blood flow.
-
Try and sleep on your back. This encourages deep/belly breathing and prevents excessive rotation of the head and pressure in the neck, thereby reducing stress through the muscles and joints.
-
Make sure your pillow is appropriate for you. A correct pillow should not force your head into an unnatural resting position. It should hold your head in a neutral position. Multiple pillows are rarely justified.
