The Tonabrucky Challenge is five this June and to celebrate the novel charity road race is calling on all runners, walkers and strollers to take part in this year’s 6km distance race. The race which is hosted by Rahoon/Newcastle Hurling Club will take place on Saturday 6 June at 6pm.
The 6km road race which is sponsored by 37 west is Athletics Association Ireland (AAI) certificated will take place in the Rahoon area and will incorporate the now famous Tonabrucky hill.
This year, the race will be raising money for the Rahoon hurling club and for Gorta – Self Help Africa Galway.
“This is the first time we will be running for a charity that works on an international level and we are delighted to be able to do this. The race has raised over €30,000 over the past 4 years and is now firmly fixed on both the running and local calendar for the people of Rahoon and Galway. We get runners from across Galway and each year we always have a few international runners, even as far away as Australia and Hawaii,” said race organiser Lisa Regan.
Lisa explained, “Every year, people leave the race absolutely buzzing with excitement as they have completed a tough 6km circuit but when you cross that finish line, it is just a feeling you cannot beat.”
The club is calling on all runners, walkers and even strollers to take part. The cost of entry is €20 for a runner/walker and €5 for a junior entrant. This year there is also a team challenge, so the run are calling on all local teams to race against one another and see just who is the fittest team and club. Teams of four can be registered.
