Join Pat Falvey and Pat Spillane on the annual Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk

May 16, 2014 by admin

The 9th annual Kerry Way Cancer Research walk in aid of Breakthrough Cancer Research who fundraise for the Cork Cancer Research Centre was launched by world renowned adventurer Pat Falvey and legendary Kerry footballer and sports pundit Pat Spillane. The pair are inviting you all to don your walking boots and join them in Kerry from the 25th to the 27th of July.

The Kerry Way Cancer Research walk is a guided 70 km walk over three days combining impressive mountain views, dramatic peaks and glens, wild moorlands, wooded paths and lakes along the Kerry Way trails.  Challenging but fun, the great camaraderie on the route adds to the spectacular settings and ensures a truly memorable experience in the Kingdom.

The walks over the three days include some of Irelands most fabulous walk ways Lauragh to Kenmare incorporating part of The Beara Way, Lough Inchiquin the Torc Waterfall and Esknamucky Glen, with a surprise on Friday, which consists of a unique Boat Trip across Beautiful Kenmare Bay, landing at Templenoe to start our Twilight walk to Kenmare.

The 9th annual Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk will take place on Friday July 25th, Saturday 26th and Sunday July 27th. The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk is a 70km fundraising event that has gone from strength to strength contributing over €600,000 to Cork Cancer

Famous for his adventurous spirit Pat Falvey said “Each year I look forward to this event, it is great to take a break from the hustle and bustle, join a fantastic bunch of people and see some of the wonderful sights of this part of the country. I am calling on you all to don your walking boots and join us as we walk for research. Cancer affects so many people, through their own journey or through someone they know.  Taking on cancer is a daunting challenge which requires focus and determination, elements which are also needed for facing other challenges in life such as climbing Mount Everest walking to the North or South Pole.  However the greatest challenges cannot be achieved alone – it is the team supporting you that will help you get through.  Just like the team of people that I work with to achieve what most would say as impossible, the team at the Cancer Research Centre provides focus and determination to the challenge of bringing new treatments to cancer patients.  I’m delighted to be involved in this event and to lend my name and support as part of the fundraising efforts for cancer research, and to help combat cancer”.

No stranger to team work, Kerry legend Pat Spillane explains his involvement “There are still too many people, family and friends who are affected by cancer.  I was lucky enough in my playing career to be a part of a fantastic team, with everyone working tirelessly to reach the same goal.  The team of researchers at the Cancer Research Centre are the very same, highly skilled and talented and working together to develop cutting edge research which will provide cures for cancer.  It promises to be a great weekend and I’m inviting you all to come and Challenge Yourself and Challenge Cancer in the stunning surrounds of one of the most glorious places on earth, the Kingdom!”

Speaking at the launch of the event Orla Dolan, Fundraising Manager with Breakthrough Cancer Research said “The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk is an approximate 70km three day fundraising event that has gone from strength to strength raising over €650,000 for cancer research in the past nine years.  Although we are living in challenging economic times, research must progress if we are to continue advancing new cancer treatments and positively impacting patient lives. The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk is open to everyone over the age of 18 and each walker is expected to be fit enough to complete each walk. Walkers can decide on how many days they would like to walk, one, two or all three days over this fantastic weekend. While some people take part with friends, a lot of people come on their own, as the weekend is a great way to meet new people from all over the country”.
