Sight is the sense we value the most — research reveals that four out of five people (81%) would rather be deaf than blind. In the same survey almost nine out of ten adults (87%) said they would sacrifice their sense of taste to save their vision, seven out of ten (71%) said they would rather lose a limb than the ability to see and three out of four would prefer a 50% pay cut to a 50% decline in their vision.
Presbyopia — ‘old eye’ in Greek — occurs as the crystalline lens of the eye ages and loses flexibility. More than half of adults over the age of 40 have presbyopia. As this begins, it becomes harder to read things like a newspaper or restaurant menu. An obvious giveaway is having to hold text further away to focus.
Common sight problems such as myopia (short-sight), which affects up to one in three people in the UK, and hyperopia (long-sight), which affects one in ten, can occur at any age.
All three can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses and sometimes surgery, although there are clear advantages to contacts. They provide a wider field of view than glasses, they don’t fog up, and won’t slip when you’re sweating or leaning over. Surgery, while useful for some people with short or long sight, is not guaranteed to work and cannot always correct presbyopia.
One of the real downside of contact lenses — having to clean and disinfect them after every use to prevent a build-up of bacteria and proteins — is defeated by using a daily disposable lens such as Biotrue ONEday, a premium lens developed by Bausch + Lomb.
The Biotrue lens is made from HyperGel™, a new material which helps maintain eye health because it works like your eyes:
- Matches the water content of the cornea
- Allows optimal oxygen transmission
- Mimics the protective lipid layer of the eye to eliminate friction and improve comfort
Francesca Marchetti, an optometrist and advisor to WINK, an independent eye-care panel supported by Bausch + Lomb, notes, “Compliance is a real issue with soft lenses which need cleaning.”
Research by Bausch + Lomb has shown that almost one in three (30%) contact lens users don’t replace all the solution in their storage case, one in five (20%) never clean the case, one in six (17%) doesn’t check the expiry date on their cleaning solution and one in ten (11%) rubs and rinses to clean their lenses.
“When you see statistics like these, it’s hardly surprising that two out of three users stop wearing contact lenses because of discomfort,” Francesca says. “This is why so many eye-care experts recommend a daily disposable lens — and, a lens like Biotrue ONEday can be a good choice.”
And for people with age-related vision problems, there is Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia, an innovative breakthrough which incorporates 3-Zone Progressive Design technology to deliver excellent near, intermediate and distant vision.
Presbyopia is thought to affect around 24 million people in the UK, and numbers will continue to rise as the Baby-Boom generation gets older. Until Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia, for many people the only viable options were single-vision reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals of progressive lenses.
However, bifocal and progressive lenses can distort peripheral vision, making it dangerously difficult to judge stairs. Reading glasses, bifocal and trifocal spectacles also advertise advancing age, which we would all prefer to avoid.
Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia overcomes these obstacles and other plus points include:
- Less variance than competitor products
- Power profile consistencies which ensure good, predictable fit and good vision
- UV protection
- Aspheric optics reduce halos and glare, especially in low light
- No ‘jump’ between zones of vision
Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia is ideal for:
- People who are either emerging or established presbyopes
- Presbyopic sufferers who are new to contact lenses
- People using “readers” but interested in multifocal contact lenses
- People interested in part-time wear options
- People desiring the convenience of daily disposable wear
- 40+ years old with presbyopia requiring a correction of +1.00 to +1.75
