The Irish Cancer Society has launched its Trek4Life programme which offers adventure seekers and outdoor types the opportunity to take on a personal challenge by signing up to a memorable Trek and all in aid of the Society. Breath-taking destinations such as Machu Picchu, Croatia and Kilimanjaro are all on offer in this year’s Trek4Life programme.
Trek4Life is open to those with all fitness levels and with the Treks scheduled for later in the year, there is plenty of time to train for those who sign up now. The Trek4Life programme offers a variety of Treks for those looking to make some lasting memories in 2015:
- The Machu Picchu Trek (26th of September – 3rd of October) follows the Inca trail to reach Machu Picchu, offering an unrivalled combination of stunning scenery and amazing culture. Rise early on the last day of trekking to see the first light hit the magnificent city of Machu Picchu, a truly special experience.
- The Croatia Trek (13th of September – 20th of September) takes in some of the most stunning stretches of coastline in Europe. Along the Adriactic Sea, the Makarska Riviera enjoys plenty of sunshine, warm crystal clear waters and a gently sloping shoreline. This Trek is suitable for trekkers, hikers or walkers.
- The Kilimanjaro Trek (Several dates available) allows you to test your boundaries on “The Roof of Africa”. Climb through a dense tropical rainforest to reach the snow-capped summit at an impressive 5,895m and create a moment you’ll never forget.
Funds raised by participants in Trek4Life will go towards Irish Cancer Society funded cancer research which works to find better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer. Over 35,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Ireland every year but more people are now surviving cancer and living longer as a result of improved treatment options. The Society is the largest voluntary funder of cancer research in Ireland and to date has made over 650 discoveries.
Mark Mellett, Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society said: “Trek4Life makes such a huge difference to the work which the Society does in the area of vital cancer research. The vision of the Irish Cancer Society is a future without cancer and we won’t give up until cancer does. Today, one in three people will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. The funds raised by our Trek4Life team will fund world-class cancer research which works to find better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer.
As a result of initiatives such as Trek4Life and the support of the public in funding our research efforts, we are making great strides in how we treat cancer resulting in improved survival rates in Ireland. Whether you want to take on a rewarding personal challenge or pay tribute to a loved one’s battle against cancer, Trek4Life gives you the opportunity to take a holiday of a difference and all for a good cause.”
The Society has a dedicated fundraising team on hand to offer advice and support to all Trekkers. For further information on trek4Life, you can visit www.cancer.ie/trek or call the Fundraising Team on 1850 60 60 60.
