Dry skin can be a problem all year round, but can worsen in winter when the weather is cold and damp. The lack of natural daylight, increased moisture in the air, woolly jumpers and central heating, can mean that skin becomes flaky, dry and lifeless.
Noelle O’Connor, founder of the world’s first Eco-Certified self-tanning brand, TanOrganic, offers her top five tips on keeping skin hydrated, healthy and glowing, even when the weather leaves us cold.
Watch your water temperature: Although taking a really hot bath is tempting when it’s cold, avoid making it too toasty. Heat, even in water, makes it easier for your skin to loose moisture. Try a soothing warm bath or shower instead and make sure you have a big, fluffy bath towel ready to wrap yourself in.
Use a plant-based oil: Choose a body oil that doesn’t contain water (as these tend to evaporate off the skin and oils penetrate better), such as TanOrganic’s Oil Arganic (€24.99/100ml). This dry oil contains a unique blend of eight different plant oils, including Argan oil, Coconut oil and Macadamia nut oil amongst others. Extremely hydrating, this oil can be used to combat dry skin all over the body, as well as helping to make hair and nails healthy and shiny.
Extra tip: Add a few drops of Oil Arganic to your bath or apply after the bath to damp skin. This will help to seal in moisture and create a protective barrier.
Protect your skin: The sun’s rays can still be very strong in winter, so don’t forget to use a good sun protection lotion, SPF face cream and SPF lip balm. This will help to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and cold, skin-chapping winds.
Exfoliate regularly: Dead skin cells are present all year round. Exfoliating two or three times a week will help skin to renew and glow. Applying a good body oil or moisturiser to newly exfoliated skin will help with the absorption, giving extra hydration.
Turn down the central heating: Having your central heating on full blast will not only cost a fortune, but will also dry out skin and hair, and can leave you generally dehydrated. Keep it as low as you can, and try to get lots of fresh air and drink plenty of water.
Noelle says:
“It’s more important than ever to keep your skin healthy and hydrated during winter. Following these simple tips doesn’t mean making big lifestyle changes but is vital for keeping your skin glowing when the cold weather strikes!”
