Professor Simon Fishel, who was part of the original pioneering team that produced the world’s first IVF baby in 1978 and who is currently the CEO of Beacon Care Fertility in Ireland and Care Fertility in the UK has called for stricter regulation of fertility clinics in Ireland. Professor Simon Fishel has stated that implementing independent reporting systems for fertility clinics in Ireland is essential in order to improve the industry as a whole and to ensure best practice in the area of fertility treatments.
Speaking today, Professor Fishel said: “ Reproductive failure is extremely common and it is important that IVF treatments are as efficient as possible but there is a risk that Irish clinics may exaggerate their claims and success rates. We need to be constantly improving our technologies and treatments to improve the success rates of IVF in Ireland. Without independent regulation the risk is that practitioners can hide behind false claims and bad practice which is not beneficial to the industry as a whole”.
He added: “At Beacon Care Fertility we are constantly working to improve our success rates by introducing the latest technological advances in the area of fertility. In particular Beacon CareMaps, an IVF time-lapse breakthrough technology delivers a 56% uplift in live birth rates. This technology uses time lapse imaging and morphokinetic algorithms to predict whether an embryo has a low, medium or high chance of a live birth. Our scientists have discovered that developmental delays in the embryo at crucial stages indicate chromosomal abnormalities which will not result in a successful pregnancy. This as well as other gene research we are working on which can predict the likelihood of miscarriage are all important steps in order to help improve success rates of IVF in Ireland. It is essential that independently reviewed success rate charts are available in Ireland to help people to make informed choices and to ensure transparency and clarity around IVF success rates”.
In 2012 Beacon Medical Group partnered with Care Fertility in opening a new clinic in Beacon Medical Campus. Beacon Care Fertility offers Irish-based patients all the latest cutting edge therapies, not generally available elsewhere, avoiding the need to travel overseas for advanced fertility treatment.
Beacon Care Fertility offers a unique experience by offering patients progressive and effective treatments such as pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), Reproductive Immunology and Chromosome Screening which was pioneered by CARE scientist in the UK, with hundreds of healthy babies already born following such treatment.
