Charlie Bird has announced plans to lead a special Hand of Friendship Walk for Samaritans this April.
The veteran broadcaster will lead hundreds of Samaritans volunteers and supporters through Avondale Forest Park in his beloved Co. Wicklow on Sunday 21st April. Registration details will follow www.samaritans.ie
The Charlie Bird Hand of Friendship Walk for Samaritans is being supported by Coillte, which is inviting the public to Rathdrum for the event with a wheelchair and buggy friendly route available.
Charlie, who is determined to raise awareness for organisations while he continues to battle MND (Motor Neuron Disease), announced his plans on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I am so excited to be asked to lead the Samaritans walk in April in Avondale,” Charlie also said.
“Samaritans is a great organisation and its branches and volunteers deserve our support for extending the hand of friendship.”
Last April, more than 500 people joined Charlie as he led his first Hand of Friendship Walk for Samaritans in Avondale.
Samaritans operates a 24-hour freephone helpline on 116 123, offering a listening ear to anyone who is struggling to cope. Charlie has said he gave his support to the charity after he found himself in a dark place when he was diagnosed with MND.
Sarah O’Toole, Executive Director for Samaritans Ireland, paid tribute to Charlie for all the support he has given to the organisation over the last 18 months.
“Charlie is an inspiration to so many people and his determination to continue to support us and others is incredible,” she said.
“We are delighted that Charlie will lead our Hand of Friendship Walk on Sunday 21st April at 12pm with volunteers from Samaritans branches across Ireland.”
